Health Services Research and Implementation Science focuses on improving the quality of treatment and care, ensuring world-leading cancer outcomes and experiences of people affected by cancer.
What is Health Services Research?
It is the study of the organisation and delivery of effective and cost-efficient health services. It looks at the best way to deliver health care services.
It is different to clinical research, which is focused on the treatment and care of individuals.
Health services research draws on multiple methodologies such as health economics, epidemiology, behavioural science, statistics, and implementation science.
What is Implementation Science?
Implementation science focuses on making sure that treatments, models of care and policies that have been proven to work are actually used in real-life situations. It involves studying the process of how research findings are put into practice, and looking at what makes it easier or harder to use them.
What kinds of questions does Health Services Research try to answer?
- What factors influence the use of genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes among high-risk individuals, and how can access to and uptake of genetic testing be improved?
- What is the impact of the implementation of a survivorship care plan on patient-reported outcomes, healthcare utilization, and costs among cancer survivors?
- What are the disparities in access to cancer care among rural and urban populations, and what interventions can be implemented to improve access and outcomes among rural cancer patients?
