Peter Gourlay

Peter joined the Community Advisory Committee in July 2024. He has been a Peter Mac melanoma patient since 2017 when he underwent surgery and began a year of immunotherapy as adjuvant therapy. More recently he has been a genitourinary patient.

Peter has a professional background in education, project management, consumer engagement and social justice, and these days he enjoys being a Civil Celebrant. He is a proud gay man and is a member of Peter Mac’s Pride Network.  At home he enjoys a busy life with Bernie, his partner of 25 years.

Peter believes there is a direct relationship between a good clinical outcome and a good experience. At Peter Mac, he has learnt not only the value of appropriate and timely support and information, but also the important role that networking and advocacy can play. As a result, Peter is passionate about empowering and harnessing diverse consumer voices and ensuring they are heard at all stages of treatment, research and policy development. This passion prompted his involvement in the Consumer Register at Peter Mac.

In addition to the Community Advisory Committee, Peter is a community member of the Human Research Ethics Committee, as well as the Clinical Ethics Advisory Group. He is also one of four consumer facilitators involved in the Your Thoughts Matter program (an evidence-based education program designed to embed core communication skills within health services), and an active collaborator and consumer advisor on a variety of research projects and melanoma reference groups. Peter is also engaged in projects at the VCCC, The Doherty and Cancer Council Victoria.
