Shane Murray joined the Community Advisory Committee in July 2025. A Yorta Yorta man, he holds the inaugural joint appointment between the Community Advisory Committee and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee, fostering key linkages between these important Peter Mac committees.
Shane has experience as a patient with a rare and aggressive cancer, and as a patient with bowel cancer. He has been treated at Peter Mac. Shane’s treatment included a very long inpatient stay, and while he is grateful to Peter Mac for his care, he said he noticed during this period a number of things that could be changed to help improve patient experiences.
Shane’s professional background as a boilermaker, tradesperson, sheet metal worker, horseman and bull rider has taken him across Australia, including living in remote communities. Through these travels, Shane says he developed a very good understanding of Indigenous culture, as well as people’s needs.
As well as his work on the Community Advisory Committee and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee, Shane is now sharing his experience of cancer and disability, and his deep cultural knowledge, to help with a wide range of projects aimed at improving Peter Mac’s care for all. He has contributed to a broad range of activities and consultations and is a member of the Increasing Accessibility of Peter Mac Men's Shed Project Advisory Group.
