Caring for the carers as part of National Carers Week

17 October 2025

Have you ever taken a Sound Bath? What about undergoing Forest Therapy?

Well, patients and carers from Peter Mac were able to take part in both of these unique opportunities this week to help celebrate National Carers Week.

Carmen Larkin, Carer Support Officer, said there are millions of Australians who provide unpaid care and support to loved ones facing illness, disability, or age-related challenges including people affected by cancer.

“Caring is often an unseen role but its impact on patients is profound,” Carmen said.

“As part of National Carer’s Week, we took the chance to pause and thank some of the carers who perform this role to support patients at Peter Mac.

“Earlier this week we held a ‘Sound Bath’ especially for carers in the reflection space, where specific instruments were played at particular frequencies to create a relaxing atmosphere and help those taking part to rest deeply and to release their emotions.

“We also hosted a fully guided Forest Therapy session in the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens which enabled carers to be immersed in forested surroundings with the aim of promoting mental and physical health whilst relaxing and enjoying nature.

“Both of these experiences aimed to recognise the work of carers and give them the chance to look after their own wellbeing,” she said.

Carmen said carers often report poor health and high levels of stress.

“Carers play an invaluable role in the lives of our cancer patients, whether they are family members, friends, or neighbours. They provide comfort and strength during some of life’s most difficult moments,” she said.

“The compassion and resilience of those caring for people living with cancer is inspiring and does not go unnoticed. But they don’t need to do it all alone.

“Our fantastic Carer Support Program at Peter Mac offers tailored support to all our carers, including practical advice, a peer support group, and a psychology service.

“We encourage everyone to learn more about the support available for carers and understand how we can all support them to continue this crucial role,” Carmen said.
