Peter Mac welcomed the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, today as she visited to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Governor-General spoke with staff and patients to understand the work going on around Peter Mac related to research, prevention and the treatment of breast cancer.
Peter Mac Chief Executive, Professor Jason Payne, said Her Excellency met with breast cancer clinicians, researchers and consumers as part of the visit.
“We were honoured to host the Governor-General and showcase some of the amazing breast cancer-related work taking place around Peter Mac,” Professor Payne said.

“Professor Paul James explained to Her Excellency how testing is being used to predict cancer risk based on a person’s genetic profile while Dr Wanda Cui emphasised the need to understand the potential impact of treatment on things like fertility, particularly as survival rates continue to increase.
“Professor Sarah-Jane Dawson also explained how a simple blood test known as a liquid biopsy is helping clinicians to track a patient’s cancer and personalise their treatment more quickly,” he said.
The visit finished in the Wellbeing Centre where the Governor-General met Nurse Clinical Consultants, a breast cancer patient and members of the Patient Experience and Wellbeing team.
“A big thank you to patient, Lissy, who was incredibly open and brave in sharing her experiences with breast cancer over a number of years,” Professor Payne said.
“The impact of the stories shared by our patients is always very clear and such a strong reminder of why we come to work every day at Peter Mac.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about creating awareness and acknowledging the millions of lives that are affected by breast cancer.
“We thank the Governor-General for making the time to visit us as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and for her interest in the world leading research and care we provide at Peter Mac,” he said.
