New CT scanner for Peter Mac
18 July 2025
Peter Mac today hosted Victorian Minister for Health Infrastructure, the Hon. Melissa Horne, to announce the latest round of Medical Equipment Replacement Program (MERP) funding.
A total of $35 million has been allocated for ten replacement projects across eight health services. This includes a new CT scanner to replace an end-of-life machine at Peter Mac.
“This is an important program that delivers our world-class hospitals the latest medical equipment – giving more Victorians access to the very best care, close to home,” Minister Horne said of the MERP.
“This investment is also about backing our dedicated healthcare staff, ensuring they have cutting-edge equipment available when they need it, whether it is in the operating theatre or imaging to make a diagnosis.”
Latest generation CT scanners deliver higher quality images with lower radiation exposures for patients.
Peter Mac’s Chief Executive Professor Jason Payne welcomed this latest vital investment by the Victorian Government into our healthcare infrastructure.
“This latest support enables us to replace aging medical equipment and ensure our patients and frontline staff have access to the most advanced and up-to-date technology available,” says Professor Payne.
“It reflects our shared commitment to enhancing the quality, safety and effectiveness of care for the communities we serve.”
Last year the MERP provided a significant upgrade to surgical endoscopes and related sterilisation equipment used in Peter Mac’s theatres.
This supported a capacity increase which enabled surgery for around 100 additional patients.
The Department of Health funded Peter Mac to perform additional surgeries in 2024-25, and a significant proportion of these were endoscopic procedures using this new equipment.
The MERP supports hospitals to upgrade and install new, modern medical equipment. You can read the Victorian Government’s announcement in full here.
