Peter Mac Researchers recognised for their global influence

Peter Mac researchers have once again been recognised as among the very best in the world following the release of lists acknowledging their influence.
Seven Peter Mac researchers made the esteemed annual Highly Cited Researchers List compiled by data analysts Clarivate, with five also named as Australia’s best researchers in their respective fields.
Professors Sherene Loi, Michael Hofman, Phil Darcy, Paul Beavis, John Seymour, Andrew Wei and Professor Shahneen Sandhu are named by Clarivate as researchers who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field of research.
While The Australian’s 2026 Research magazine listed Professors Sherene Loi, Michael Hofman, Monica Slavin, Dr Dale Garsed and Dr Attila Horvath as Australia’s best researchers in their field.
Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, highly cited researchers are 1 in 1,000.
Peter Mac Executive Director Cancer Research, Professor Ricky Johnstone, said it is pleasing to see seven Peter Mac researchers on the list once again, reinforcing our reputation as a world-leading cancer research centre.
“To also have five Peter Mac researchers named as the best researchers in Australia for their field is incredible.
“This is global recognition of the exceptional influence and impact our researchers make towards improving cancer patient outcomes,” he said.
“The mix of clinical, laboratory and health services researchers recognised showcases how unique we are at Peter Mac to be able to work across the full research spectrum from bench to bedside.”
Bar Veinstein, President of Academia & Government at Clarivate, said celebrated the Highly Cited Researchers 2025 for advancing innovation and inspiring the global research community to tackle society’s greatest challenges with creativity and ingenuity.
Each researcher selected has authored multiple highly cited papers which rank in the top one per cent by citations for their field/s and publication year in the Web of Science over the past eleven years.
The seven Peter Mac researchers are among 312 researchers from Australia – the fifth highest country ranked behind the US, China, United Kingdom and Germany - to feature on the list.
In total, 6,868 individual researchers from institutions in 67 countries and regions made the list in 2025.
